Driveway Sealing
Sealing your driveway can be the most effective way to keep the weeds at bay. Block paving driveways are notoriously high maintenance. Each joint is filled with kiln dried sand to stabilise the blocks and stop any movement. This looks great when installed , or when it’s just been cleaned. However , as airborne seeds naturally fall into the sand ,they become a breeding ground for algae, moss and worst of all – weed growth ! As a homeowner you may have spent many hours scraping out the joints or maybe spraying weed or moss killers.
What is sealing?
‘Sealing’ the joints means saturating them with an acrylic based resin product. Once cured the sand becomes rock hard , and in theory should never have to be disturbed. You can even use a pressure washer and it will not upset them. This stops seeds settling in the sand and it stops weeds taking root. It creates a solid base which is much easier to maintain.
The sealant also soaks into the concrete blocks and protects the blocks surface from erosion and UV damage.
How much does it cost?
Sealing block paving does cost substantially more than just cleaning-
current rates are approximately £4 per square meter to clean and sand ,
£10 per square meter to clean sand and seal
However , long term value should always be weighed up.
Factors to consider are –
The environment eg surrounding trees and foliage- We recommend sealing on drives surrounded by trees or where weed growth is likely
Density of vehicular traffic- Heavy frequent wear and tear from cars will quickly erode the concrete blocks so sealing will help protect them
Long term dwelling- If you are likely to be selling the property it will be more cost effective to clean and sand only
