We are very experienced at Cleaning Roof Tiles and Gutters. Over the last few years it has developed into our main income. Often the work comes from recommendations, when the neighbours see how long lasting the results are. Most roofs that we clean have not been touched for decades. The majority of what we remove is organic growth. This is perfectly natural in a damp climate. Algae forms on the concrete tiles, then if this is left long enough moss will grow. You will have noticed birds love to sit in the moss looking for grubs, often knocking it down into your gutters or onto your patio.
Does Moss harm my roof ?
It would be dramatic to say ‘yes it definitely harms the roof’. However we do see it causes problems in certain situations. It does not allow the rain water to run off as it should, it constantly drops into gulleys, valleys, gutters and drains- blocking them. When it holds water and freezes it can break tiles. Another good reason to remove roof moss is to see clearly what repairs need doing. A roof cannot seriously be assessed until its tiles can be properly viewed.
Does cleaning the roof damage it?
Cleaning roof tiles and gutters REVEALS the true condition of the roof. It is possible to break concrete tiles by walking on them. Fortunately we have ways to avoid walking up and down the roof. Usually our mobile scaffold tower provides a suitable platform to extend poles from. In some cases we bring in a cherry picker or we can always use roof ladders as a last resort.
In most cases we wash the tiles with water as this is the most effective way to thoroughly clean the roof and remove all the moss. Alternatively, we have scraped and brushed roof tiles but this is a slow laborious process and we have found results to be not as thorough( For the money you spend we want to give you a certain ‘Wow factor ‘).
how long will it stay clean ?
Once we have removed a ton of moss from your roof , we do not want to ever let it get in this state again. After the clean we saturate the tiles in a biocide chemical. This kills off any remaining moss or algae spores. However ,this will only last so long as nature begins it’s cycle once again. In worst cases some buildings with overhanging foliage will need an annual treatment. Other buildings will last 3/4 years before needing a re spray. But this maintenance plan would guarantee no moss ever returning. The gutters would still need an annual clear out.
