How to clean a tarmac drive

How to clean a tarmac drive

A Tarmac drive can look nice and smooth and shiny when first laid. You may have swept or removed leaves , or even carefully pressure washed it a couple of times. But within a year you may notice moss is beginning to form in the small ‘recesses’ or ‘gaps’ in the tarmac surface. This is nothing to panic about , its normal – especially if where you live is surrounded by trees and foliage , or has a damp climate.

Does the moss cause damage ?

Eventually yes. As with most buildings and surfaces, if left alone to the elements , nature has a way of slowly and gently breaking down what man has built. The moss will hold water. It will then freeze and expand which will deteriorate the tarmac.

Before and after clean

How can we avoid this happening?

An early application of Algoclear pro biocide (or a similar product ) will prevent a new drive being infested with organic growth. This treatment kills algae and does not allow chance for moss to grow. This will need repeating at appropriate intervals e.g annually or more frequently in some cases.
The treatment has no negative side effects to the tarmac. Although, be aware it can harm pets while it is still active ( meaning not dried out).

What if my tarmac is already full of moss?

In this case we need to remove the moss, then clean  and treat the tarmac to get right down to the ‘ root’ of the problem. Usually we kill the moss first before pressure washing. This stops the moss ‘clinging’ to the tarmac and ripping up small bits of it. Thick moss will even require a plastic shovel first before any spraying or washing.
